Character Breakdown
Devlin Latimore- The most objective and multi-faceted antagonist to ever have been written. He is a Bishop of a mega church that is at one time thriving. But a congregation is only as great as their leadership. Unfortunately before anything he is human well, sub-human if his dangerous proclivities are anything to judge him by. Before the churches eyes his sins are laid bare and just like men of arrogance tend to do he stands unashamed on his sin. But pride surely comes before a fall. He loses members and the respect of those closest to him. Is that enough to cause him to correct his actions or is he to far gone on this path he set upon himself.
Ms. Sonja Latimore- Wife, Mother and First Lady are just a few of the hats she wears. She is dedicated to the Lord and keeping up the appearances in front of the congregation. Blind, she pretends to be to the many issues that effect her home and marriage. How can she see when she is neglected, misused and abused by the very man that stood before God and promised to love, protect and honor her. Trying to live by the word she ignores the signs of a deeper issue effecting her home. Trying to please God, Her Husband and a people born of judgement may cause her to lose everything that matters most.
Ms. Donetta Williams- She is a widow and newly single mother. If it wasn't for her good friends Devlin and Sonja she wouldn't know how she would make it through. By prayer and her faith in God she only hopes to see brighter days. Its a good thing she has such an intricate support system to help raise her daughter British whom happens to be the god daughter of the Bishop and First Lady. She pours all her free time into the church as well as working extra shifts. Entrusting her daughter in the hands of the Latimore's so she can work to provide a comfortable life made harder by this new station. Her absence and trust in anything but God may just cause more harm than good.
British Williams- Young girl absent a fathers guidance. Losing her father has been an absolute defining moment in the moulding of a young woman. Her once happy life is now upset but her parents instilled a love of God in her at an early age. Although young she knows that she can only depend on Him to help her through. She takes solace in the love she shares with her god sister Simone whom is like a mentor and guide in a world turned lonely by death. But they are bonded by more than a sisterly love. Their secrets and demons makes them guardians of one another. Her innocence becomes tainted by the very things meant to protect it.
Simone- She is the daughter of a bishop and raised with a love and respect of the church that only Preachers Kids can attest too. She loves God and her parents and her little god sister British. She takes British under her wings and tries to shield her from life especially the things that happen when there are no witnesses or anything to protect them from being prey. Her heart and spirit are heavy and she holds it all inside until her biggest secret seeks to destroy not only her life but those around her. Overcoming and wishing for brighter days were once hope, until she feels like there is only one way to be free of the pain that binds her soul.
Tory Brooks- Suffering with his identity and what the chuchs deems appropriate for a man. Tory finds himself hiding in a shell. He has a mother that is dying and a family who ostracized him. The only happy place he has is singing. Living on the outskirts of prejudice especially from the leader of the church whom does not hide his disdain for him or his lifestyle. He feels like giving up until his mother lets him know its okay to live in his truth. With his back straight and chin up he walks in his destiny. But opening up to others just may have invited the devil to his front door.
Deacon Kenneth- All he wants to do is his part and ensuring that the church prospers. Bound by loyalty and duty he finds himself in precarious positions. He is helping the Bishop keep secrets so that he doesn't hurt the ones he loves. In doing so he is reminded of the young man he was, without the wisdom that comes with time to guide his actions. He tries to save his leader from the sins of his personal experience. He begins to question why God allows a man with no moral boundaries to lead a flock. He pulls himself away until this leaders sins starts creeping round his doorstep and sends him down a path that was long ago forgotten.
Story From My Perspective
In the lines of this book are many great lessons. Some of the hard truths I learned. Were more personal than this author could know. My emotions were captivated by this story of tragedy with triumph upon the horizons. I felt my heart strings being tugged and cried many tears for these characters that not only touched me but healed me as well.
You look at the roles of the leaders in the black church. How when things happen they are swept under the rug. You are expected to follow the leadership blindly. Just because they were called. Sometimes we find ourselves putting our faith in Man who is fallible instead of God who is infallible.
When you delve into the issues wrapped in secrecy. You find yourself outraged, nonplussed and thoroughly offended. It was like you saw that in peoples blackened hearts, you found an evil that would make hell shiver. To see how so many lives could be effected by black thoughts, fraudulence and misguidance.
You will find your heart moved and your soul shaken. Just remember at your lowest and darkest moments you can breakthrough. Every victim in this story is a victor in my eyes and you can find the strength to overcome by reading these powerful words that can only fortify your understanding in how you are not your tragedy by clicking the link below and purchasing this 5-star read:
